If you were to ask a random stranger what cybersecurity means for them, they’d probably say it’s something that is complicated, and only people who are experts can understand how to do it. Here lies the problem. Cybersecurity shouldn’t be seen as complex and hard to do. It should be seen as quite the opposite. That’s where the term “Data Care” can help.
What is “Data Care”?
Similar to the term “health care” by design, Data Care is a term chosen because of its ability to leverage terminology that is already known to the general public. People are aware that there are multiple disciplines to healthcare, such as pediatrics, oncology, mental health, geriatrics, and more. Something largely unknown to the general public is that the same thing applies to cybersecurity.
Talking about cybersecurity as the “Data Care” industry allows people to understand that there are multiple disciplines and careers in cybersecurity. Some disciplines, such as legal, policymaking, and marketing, do not even require a technical background. In essence, “Data Care” is a way to make talking about cybersecurity more inclusive, understandable, and accessible.
Encouraging Diversity
Since this term makes cybersecurity easier to understand, it encourages diversity in the field. No longer will people feel as if they need to be experts to be able to work in cybersecurity. The term “Data Care” is less intimidating, and that means companies will be able to attract people of different thoughts, races, and genders. A diversified company means a more successful company. But it all starts by changing the way the general public sees cybersecurity, also known as “Data Care”.
Why Does it Matter?
Changing the way we see and talk about cybersecurity is very important. Cyber touches all of our lives. Our computers, tablets, phones, and even smart TVs are equipped with our personal data, and it’s up to each and every one of us to protect ourselves. Cybersecurity is not something that is best left to the experts. There are basic things all of us can do that will protect our personal data, and keep us safe on the internet.
Additionally, it’s important that we diversify the cybersecurity industry. As of right now, the industry is not as inviting to the majority of the public, including people of color, women, and young adults. The industry must be able to attract these kinds of people because if not, there will continue to be low interest in both protecting data and recruiting the number of people required to help us do it.
Doing Our Part to Change the Industry
MAGIC has always been about diversity and inclusion in the cybersecurity industry. Our goal is to build a tech ecosystem that creates and nurtures talent, entrepreneurship, and tech businesses, elevating the Westminster Gigabit Community to lead the Mid-Atlantic region.
