May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and while it’s important we help those who struggle year round, this is the month when our nation puts an extra emphasis on helping those with mental health needs. At MAGIC, we know how important the early stages of life are for the development of a healthy state of mind. So, with more than 90% of American kids playing video games, we try to do our part in promoting healthy gaming attitudes through our Good Game initiative.
Mental Benefits of Playing Video Games
At some point in time, we’ve all heard someone say something along the lines of “don’t play those games or sit so close to the tv, you’ll rot your brain!’ While it’s important to note that everybody is different, so not everyone will have the same experience, industry studies have shown that most children and adults who play games actually receive positive effects including:
- Increased social skills
- Boosts in creativity
- Improved spatial navigation
- Cognitive skill improvement
- Improved memory and perception
What is a Healthy Gaming Attitude?
After two or more players have completed a game, be it tabletop or video, it is customary to exchange “GG’s,” otherwise known as “good game” messages. This is a common courtesy shared when all playing parties were satisfied with the game played while exhibiting a sign of respect for their fellow gamer. Other healthy gaming attitudes include calmly channeling any anger or frustration, developing proper sportsmanship, and avoiding addictive gaming behavior. These are all behaviors we encourage players at GGFest.
Community Fun at Good Game Festival
MAGIC is deeply invested in the community of Westminster and Carroll County, which is why we love to interact with members of the community throughout the year at our various events. That said, Good Game Fest is one of our favorite activations and is one of the top events that we look forward to the most. Video games are fun, but what’s more fun is watching the next generation develop their own love for gaming and game development in a healthy way.
