MAGIC, the economic development non-profit organization focused on technology and broadband infrastructure in Westminster, MD held its third cybersecurity competition on April 22nd at the Community Media Center in Westminster, MD. Over 50 students competed in two divisions in two locations in a timed competition solving a wide range of cybersecurity problems in a “jeopardy” style format. Uniquely positioned as an entry level beginner competition, the program is growing rapidly and involved students from three counties and eight educational institutions.
The Winners
Beginner division
First place: “We’re Out” (Daniel Cleaver, Beau Dickens, Jonathan Woodward);
Second place: “FCC Cyber 2” (Christian Lowe, Tiffany Anders, Matt Reiser);
Third place: “FCC Cyber 1” (Brandon Hertel, Brandon Skipper, Derek Sappington)
Intermediate division
First place: “Team Unethical” (Joey Magitti, Josh Wenderoth, Graham Harrison);
Second place: “F@1c0ns” (Chris Windsor, Sam Koyfman).
Student competitors represented Carroll County Public Schools, Gerstell Academy, the Carroll Career and Tech Center, Frederick County Public Schools, Carroll Community College, Frederick Community College, McDaniel College, and University of Maryland University College.
The 3rd CTF was sponsored by Ting Internet, CTC Technology and Energy, and Carroll Community College.
Supporters include the Community Media Center, Carroll County Public Library, the City of Westminster, Infopathways/Freedom Broadband, and Kojak Graphics.
The event was live streamed on the MAGIC Facebook page (MAGICWestMD) and can be viewed there.
MAGIC measures its economic development impact on three outcomes: job creation, new company creation or recruitment, and new investment dollars into the community.
