Game Development Summer Workshops
For individuals 12 years and older interested in coding and game development using Unity and C#. The summer workshop series of classes include an Intro to Game Development and 3D Game Development – Level 1. Each class is a 10 week course and students will walk away with a playable video game.
The cost for each class is $350.*.
*Registration is free for Westminster, MD residents and financial assistance is available for Carroll County residents on a first come, first serve basis. Military family discount is also available. Please contact info@magicinc.org for more information on how to qualify.
Intro to Game Development
A practical introduction to game design. Utilizing industry standards, the class teaches the basics of game design and emphasizes the use of basic design tools. Participants will work to outline, design, implement and test their 2D rolling game. This course kickstarts the students skill base to further their understanding of the design and build lifecycle.
Students will gain an introduction to:
- C# Programming
- Unity Platform
- Game Design Workflow
- Managing Game Development in Unity
- Implement 2D Character Animation Trees
- Creating Story Through Gameplay
- Adding Sound and Lighting to the Level
- Creating Player Health and Damage UI
- Design and Development of a 2D SideScroller level

3D Game Development – Level 1
This course will build on the skills learned in the Intro to Game Development class. However, students with a basic understanding of the Unity editor are welcome to join.
Students will gain further understanding of an introduction to:
- C# Programming for 3D
- Using the Unity 3D development environment
- Creating complex dungeon pieces from art primitives
- Dungeon elements such as corridors, rooms, stairways and traps
- Populating the Dungeon with props and furniture such as torches, chains and tables.
- Lighting and sound
- 3D Character Health and Damage UI
- Design and Development of a Dungeon Level
This class will also teach the basics of setting up a 3D dungeon level in Unity. Create hallways dimly lit by torches. Lead the player into hidden traps that can plunge them into holes, damaging the player. Create rooms full of creepy chains and tables that were used in ways that are terrible to contemplate. Doors that creak, crackling torches, thumps and other noises to create an eerie atmosphere of danger and fear.

The student should know how to download and install apps from the internet. Prior to the class, the student will receive instructions for downloading and installing the Unity Editor and several add-ons that will be used in the class. Be sure and allot a significant amount of time to install this software as they are fairly large applications and the installation process itself takes some time.
Minimum Hardware requirements for both courses are:
Computer Processor: Intel i3 4 core for both PCs and Macs or better
Graphics: Intel UHD graphics or the equivalent or better
Ram: 4.00 GB or better
Other requirements:
- Must have at least 40 Gig of disk space free for software installations
- A reliable high speed internet connection
The call will be held remotely using Zoom. Students are expected to log in on time and be ready with any assignments. There are no grades, but your work will be analyzed and critiqued by the teacher and other students.
There are no make up classes. The instructor will email all registered participants a recorded copy of each class for individuals who missed a session.
