The Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory (MAGIC) sponsors student programming to enhance workforce development for technology companies, particularly in the cybersecurity industry. MAGIC events are positioned as entry-level beginner events to appeal to the widest possible population of students.
MAGIC provides our own CTF events twice a year (April and October). This is a hybrid event that is well attended both in person and virtually. Because this platform is browser based, it is easy to connect multiple locations worldwide for a competition. Recent events featured participants in host locations around the world~ in Maryland, North Carolina, Idaho, Ecuador, and Estonia, with live streaming on YouTube, Facebook updates, Instagram stories, and live Tweets during the competition.
Your organization can be a part of the bigger picture in forwarding cybersecurity content. Host locations pay a one-time licensing fee per event and location, depending on number of teams, to participate in the event.
By hosting a CTF, an organization or institution can sponsor teams of students to participate in the competition. The host location takes on the cost of participating, allowing students to compete for free. The location fees in conjunction with community sponsors, covers the cost of producing the event.
A host location can be a physical location or a sponsoring organization that hosts teams from other locations around the world. Examples of a sponsoring organization would be a college or school system that sponsors teams by paying the license fees for the teams to participate. This could be your own teams from your organization(cyber clubs, cybersecurity program teams, etc) or local community partners.
A physical host location example would be a public organization, college or school system that hosts a physical location( school gym, computer lab, local library, community center, etc) and invites community participation for local teams to come together to compete.
MAGIC CTF HOST LOCATIONS
Interested in hosting a competition location for a MAGIC bi-annual event?
Your organization or business can host teams to participate in the MAGIC competition. Host locations pay a one-time licensing fee per event and location, depending on the number of teams. Your organization can host these teams in person or virtually.
A location can host in person or allow their hosted team(s) to compete virtually from any location. Participants don’t even need to be in the same physical location to compete as a team during the competition. The only requirements to participate for a team is access to an internet connection and a computer with a web browser. Your sponsor location is listed on the competition scoreboard next to the hosted team.
A designated coordinator from the location will manage the teams and provide some coaching help for participants on event day. Our online scoreboard platform also includes a chat feature that is monitored by industry professionals to answer questions or provide guidance to competitors during the competition.
Can’t host the teams physically? No Problem. If you still want to provide a CTF experience opportunity for your area, you can “Host Sponsor” teams to compete virtually from any location. The process is the same as the in person event, with the same licensing fees. However, when teams register, your location/organization will be listed as a virtual location. As teams register, your location name will appear as an affiliation/sponsor on our competition scoreboard. Although there is no in person interaction, you are still providing area participants with the experience.
The registration process is the same, no matter which type of event you plan to host.
